Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology

Research at the Institute focuses on high-resolution imaging of neuronal and glial structures in living brain tissue. Using state-of-the-art super-resolution microscopy techniques such as in vivo STED and the specially developed shadow imaging technique (SUSHI), it is possible to visualize structures in the nanometer range and investigate their dynamics under physiological and pathophysiological conditions. The research combines biology, medicine and physics and aims to gain a profound understanding of the functional microanatomy of the brain - from the extracellular environment to neuronal plasticity.
